If you sell on Facebook, TikTok, Shopee, Lazada, WhatsApp or Instagram, you have probably seen the ads: “Let AI run your shop.”

This guide sticks to what we could check: which tools exist in your country, what the research says, the rules you must follow, and five tasks to start with.

1. Why this matters

Philippines: small businesses are almost the whole economy. MSMEs are 99.63% of registered establishments and provide about 67% of jobs, based on 2023 data.

Google, Temasek and Bain projected the country's digital economy at $36 billion in gross merchandise value in 2025, with e-commerce more than 60% of it. They count 475,000 video sellers, up 90% in a year.

Nigeria: a 2026 report by Public First says 14 million Nigerian small businesses used Meta's apps in 2025. In a GSMA survey across six countries including Nigeria, 60% of micro-businesses selling online used only social media.

For most sellers, the shop is a chat window.

2. What AI is being offered to sellers

Meta Business Agent answers customers and recommends products from your catalog on WhatsApp and Messenger. It launched globally in June 2026, free for now, with paid plans planned. Meta brought Business AI to Messenger in the Philippines in October 2025.
Lazada offers sellers a chat assistant, AI-written titles and descriptions, and translation.
Shopee's parent Sea is offering eligible sellers ChatGPT for Business trials.
TikTok Shop launched AI listing and video tools in 2026. We couldn't confirm they're in the Philippines, and TikTok Shop is not available in Nigeria.
DICT (Philippines) offers free AI tools to MSMEs, including one that writes marketplace posts.

3. What the evidence says

Adoption is still low in the Philippines. In a Lazada-run survey (Feb 2025), 32% of Filipino sellers used AI; 53% were sceptical.
In Nigeria it is rising fast among formal firms. The World Bank reports AI use among firms with 5+ staff rose from under 5% (2022) to about 40% (2025). Treat that jump with care.
It helps the strong more than the weak. In a Kenyan experiment with 640 entrepreneurs, half got a GPT-4 business mentor on WhatsApp. On average, revenues and profits didn't change. Stronger ones may have gained over 15% (a suggestive result); weaker ones did nearly 10% worse.
Beginners can gain most on routine work. A study of call-centre support agents, mostly in the Philippines, found AI raised issues resolved per hour by 14%, and 34% for newer, less-skilled agents. Support work, not selling.

4. What that means for you

Read those studies together and a simple rule appears:

Use AI to do the routine parts of a business that already works, faster and more consistently.

It is less useful for big decisions where you can't check its answer, such as what to stock, how much to borrow, or which supplier to trust. In the Kenyan study, the businesses that did worse may have followed generic advice that didn't fit them.

The five tasks in this guide are all routine, and all easy to check:

Product listings
Customer replies
Photos and short videos
Sales records
Captions in your customers' language

5. Task 1: product listings

Give AI the real facts. Never ask it to “make it sound good” without them, or it will invent features.

Prompt:

“Write a product listing for [platform]. Facts: [name, size, colour, material, what's included, price, delivery areas, return policy]. Use only these facts. Title under 80 characters, 5 short bullet points, simple English. If a fact is missing, write [MISSING] instead of guessing.”

Then check: every number, every size, every claim. If the listing says “waterproof” and you never tested it, delete it.

The Philippines' Internet Transactions Act requires sellers to show accurate price, description and condition. In Nigeria, the consumer protection law bans misleading claims. AI wording counts as your wording.

6. Task 2: replying to customers

Most sellers answer the same 10 questions all day: price, stock, size, delivery, payment.

Step 1: write your own fact sheet: prices, delivery fees and times, payment methods, return rules.

Step 2: ask AI to turn it into saved replies.

“Here is my shop's fact sheet: [paste]. Write short, friendly replies to the 10 questions customers ask most. Use only these facts. For anything about refunds, complaints or a payment problem, reply: ‘Let me check and get back to you today.’”

If you try an AI agent that replies automatically, test it first with tricky questions. You are responsible for what it promises.

7. Task 3: photos and short videos

AI can remove backgrounds, fix lighting and turn photos into short clips. Use it to show the product as it is.

Don't let AI change the colour, size, material or finish. A customer who receives something different will ask for a refund, and may report you.
Keep at least one plain, real photo of the item you're selling.
Expect labels. Meta marks some AI-edited images “AI info”. Shopee's Singapore rules (Aug 2026) require labels on AI video and ban AI that changes a product's colour, size or material.

For video: film the real product on your phone, then use AI for captions, music suggestions or trimming.

Sources: TechCrunch (Jul 1, 2024); Shopee Singapore Help Centre (2026). We couldn't confirm whether Shopee applies the same rules in the Philippines.

8. Task 4: simple sales records

Many small sellers don't know their best product or their real profit. AI is good at summarising a simple sheet.

Keep one sheet with: date, product, quantity, price, cost, delivery fee, platform.

“Here is my sales sheet for the last 4 weeks: [paste, with customer names removed]. Tell me my top 5 products by profit, not just sales, which products lose money after delivery, and 3 questions I should ask myself. Show your working.”

Check its maths on two rows yourself. AI makes arithmetic mistakes.

Remove customer names and numbers before you paste. You don't need them for this, and both countries' data laws expect you to protect them.

9. Task 5: captions in your customers' language

AI can turn one caption into English, Filipino or Taglish, or into simpler English for Nigerian buyers.

Google lists Filipino as supported in Gemini. Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo are not on its list, so expect weaker results there.
Ask a native speaker to read anything important before you post.
Keep prices and numbers in digits, and check them after translating.

“Rewrite this caption in casual Taglish for Facebook buyers in Manila. Keep the price, sizes and delivery details exactly as written: [paste].”

10. Rules: the Philippines

Internet Transactions Act (RA 11967): its implementing rules were signed in May 2024. Show the price, description and condition, and on social media also how to contact you. DTI can order takedowns of non-compliant listings for up to 30 days.
Trustmark: registration stays voluntary until Dec 31, 2026.
Tax: since 2024, e-marketplaces withhold 1% on half of a seller's gross remittances. Sellers whose yearly remittances stay at ₱500,000 or below can be exempted from this withholding with a sworn declaration. That is not an exemption from income tax or BIR registration.
Data Privacy Act: collect only the customer data you need, and keep it safe.
AI labelling bills are pending in Congress, not law yet.

11. Rules: Nigeria

Consumer protection (FCCPA 2018): false or misleading representations about products are banned. Only claim what you can show.
Advertising (ARCON Act 2022): ARCON says social media adverts need approval before they run, including those by influencers, and breaches can be fined.
Data (NDPA 2023): customer names, phone numbers and addresses are personal data. An implementing directive took effect in 2025.
AI disclosure: we found no Nigerian rule specific to AI-generated ads. The general rules above still apply.

In practice, many small sellers don't seek ARCON approval for every post. Know that the rule exists, especially before paying for ads or influencers.

12. Scams aimed at sellers

Fake payment screenshots. In the Philippines, a Facebook seller was found selling templates for fake GCash receipts. In Nigeria, “flash fund” apps generate fake bank alerts. Rule: check your own app or balance before you release goods. Never trust a screenshot.
Deepfake endorsements. Fake AI ads have used Filipino celebrities and Nigerian public figures, including Pastor Adeboye, to sell products. ARCON investigated. Never use a famous face you don't have permission for.
Page takeovers. Turn on two-step login for your Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Business and marketplace accounts. Never share a login code.

13. What not to use AI for

Fake reviews or testimonials. We found no rule in either country written specifically for AI reviews, but invented reviews are misleading under the general laws above. In 2024 the US banned fake reviews, including AI-generated reviews from people who don't exist.
Health or results claims (“cures”, “guaranteed slimming”) that you can't prove.
Photos that change the product.
Promises an AI agent makes about refunds, delivery dates or discounts you didn't approve.
Pasting customer lists into AI tools you haven't checked.

A simple test: if a customer saw exactly how the post or reply was made, would they feel cheated? If yes, don't post it.

14. A 7-day starter plan

Day 1: write your shop fact sheet (prices, delivery, payment, returns).
Day 2: turn it into 10 saved replies. Check each one.
Day 3: rewrite your 5 best-selling listings with the facts-only prompt.
Day 4: re-shoot one product in daylight; use AI only to clean the background.
Day 5: start a sales sheet, even for last week from memory.
Day 6: turn on two-step login everywhere. Write your “check balance before release” rule on paper.
Day 7: compare: did replies get faster? Did fewer customers ask the same question? Keep what helped.

Free tools are enough for all seven days.

15. Our critical read

Most success numbers come from sellers of the tools. Lazada's conversion figures, TikTok's sales growth and Meta's case studies are company claims. The local seller examples we found came from Meta campaigns. We found no independent news report of a Filipino or Nigerian micro-seller's results with AI.

The best evidence is mixed. The Kenyan experiment found no average effect, and weaker businesses did worse on average.

Free now may not stay free. Meta says paid plans for its agent are coming. Build habits you can keep with free tools.

What holds up: AI is good at routine writing and summarising, if you give it real facts and check its work.

The short version

Use AI for routine work in a business that already works: listings, replies, photos, records, captions.
Give it real facts, and check every number and claim.
Show products as they are. No fake reviews, no famous faces, no claims you can't prove.
Check your own balance before releasing goods. Turn on two-step login.
Know your country's rules on listings, ads, tax and customer data.
